Similar to the human cochlea, where the different frequencies are split up and analyzed, The Snail for iOS utilizes a spiral grid to visualize root notes and overtones of incoming sound with high precision. The application is built on cutting-edge technology that simplifies instrument tuning and makes audio analysis music-centered and captivating.

Tune any instrument with precision:

Version 2 introduces an additional guitar tuning mode accessible in the tuning view. By selecting a specific string, playing a note, and adjusting the guitar tuning accordingly, users can achieve accurate results. A noteworthy enhancement is the new split window mode which displays real-time edits’ impact on visualization in the upper section. This function operates in both visualization modes: the snail grid, providing a comprehensive musical spectrum overview, and the tuner view, tailored for focusing on the root note during tuning. Both views feature a sine tuning oscillator controlled by simply touching the desired note on the iPhone screen. With numerous customizable parameters, users can tune transposing instruments or adjust the tuning reference beyond 440 Hz effortlessly.

Patented technology:

The innovative detection and visualization technology behind The Snail originates from IRCAM institute for acoustic and music research in Paris. Developed by Thomas Hélie, a CNRS researcher at the Sciences and Technologies for Music and Sound (STMS) Laboratory (IRCAM/CNRS/Sorbonne Université), this patented invention delivers cutting-edge performance. The Snail is also compatible with macOS and Windows, available as either a stand-alone app or plug-in (VST3/AU/AAX) through Plugivery.

Key features:

  • Precise audio analysis and instrument tuning offered in two distinct modes.
  • Snail view for an intricate visual representation of root notes and overtone structures.
  • Tuner view designed for instrument tuning and pitch control of voices and other sources.
